Welcome to Ms. Dishman's Counseling Corner!
I am very happy to be your School Counselor this year. I hope that we can partner to make SMMCS a safe environment that fosters the strengths of each individual student.
The Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston defines a Catholic school guidance program as a "developmental, systemic, sequential, clearly defined, and accountable. A comprehensive developmental program is vital to the academic success of all students. It is developmental by design and sequentially organized and implemented by Catholic schools with the support of teachers, administrators, students, and parents.”
Listed below are the services offered here at school.
SMMCS Counseling Program Mission,
Vision, and Ms. Dishman’s Counseling Philosophy
Mission: The St. Mary Magdalene Catholic School (SMMCS) Counseling Program exists to nurture and develop moral values and a strong Catholic identity. “Through this program, students will learn to manage their emotions, build self-awareness, maintain positive relationships, show empathy and understanding for others, and make decisions based on their faith.”
Vision: The SMMCS Counseling Program’s vision is to provide services (developmental guidance and a variety of counseling opportunities) to allow all students to succeed academically, mentally, and emotionally. Our Catholic identity shapes who we are and what we believe. The SMMCS Counseling Program utilizes the four Cardinal virtues and matches them to the American School Counselor Association’s Mindset and Behavior standards. These standards guide the program in what is developmentally appropriate for each grade level of students. The Counseling Program provides monthly developmental guidance lessons, group counseling opportunities, individual counseling opportunities, and responsive services.
Personal Philosophy: A large part of my school counseling and educational philosophy is in the belief in the dignity of each individual I come in contact with. Through this profession I am called to serve the students, but I work with many other stakeholders to develop a comprehensive school counseling program. Partnerships make a big difference in the lives of our children; I hope to form partnerships with students, staff, parents, and community members to unify our Catholic community. I am not in this position to tell students what to do; I am available to them to empower their own decision making and guide them to healthy, safe choices depending on their situation.
